Malta Independent Tuesday, 5 February 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Following the success of last year’s musical concert MMG goes Hollywood which was entirely devoted to movie soundtracks, this year is time for musicals. Music of the Night is the theme chosen for this year’s annual musical concert organised by the Maria Mater Gratiæ Philharmonic Society of Zabbar in association with the Zabbar Local Council and MMG promotions, due to be held at the Notre Dame Theater in Zabbar on Sunday 10 February, which coincides with the traditional People’s Sunday (Hadd in-Nies).

The concert band, directed by Mro. Ray Sciberras F.L.C.M, will be taking the audience through the evolution of some of the very best Broadway and West End musicals, many of which later also made it to the cinemas and hit our TV screens.

The audiovisual spectacular concert kicks-off at 7.30pm with a short but symbolic show to mark the official opening of the Society’s 125th anniversary celebrations (1883-2008).

Accompanied by the well-renowned singers Graziana Axisa, Cliff and Annabelle and member of the musical band Trilogy – Daniel Debono, the band will then play popular numbers from well-known musicals including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece Jesus Christ Superstar, The Student Prince with music by Sigmund Romberg, Memories and Don’t Cry for Me Argentina from another two of Webber’s stunning successes Cats and Evita respectively; the most famous of all French musicals and one of the most performed musicals worldwide Les Misérables, based on the 1862 novel by Victor Hugo, with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg; the British musical Oliver! with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart, based upon the popular Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist; My Fair Lady with music by Frederick Loewe; Richard Rodgers’ The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins with music and lyrics by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman, the immortal Grease, Jerry Bock’s Fiddler on the Roof, and finally All I Ask of You, Think of Me, Angel of Music and Music of the Night from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s all time classic The Phantom of the Opera.

The concert will be animated by the well-renowned compère Charles Abela Mizzi. Entrance for the show is free of charge, but one is urged to get tickets in advance. Ticket hotline: 7905 2059 and 9940 6827. More information on www.mmg.com.mt.
