Two Public Cleansing Cooperative (KIP) committee members were conditionally discharged for three years, after they were found guilty of bribing a Mosta local council employee, on and before April 2003.

Paul Cutajar, 44, from Luqa, and Joseph Cassar, 45, from Qormi, were charged, together with fellow committee member Anthony Zammit, 43, from Fgura, with bribing Joseph Borg, a supervisor within the Mosta Local Council.

The court, presided over by magistrate Lawrence Quintano, heard how prosecutor Police Inspector Carmelo Magri had been advised by the then Mosta mayor, Joseph Demartino and Secretary Alfons Anastasi that the accused, together with other KIP members had complained about default notices they had been receiving. It has been said in court that 297 default notices had been issued in the space of three months.

The notices were issued by Mr Borg after the accused had stopped paying him a monthly bribe of e232.93 (Lm100).

Cutajar and Cassar were found guilty of bribing Mr Borg, a public official, while Mr Zammit was acquitted on lack of evidence.

Lawyer David Farrugia Sacco appeared for the accused.
