Mistra Scandal: Legal steps against three people

Malta Independent Saturday, 14 June 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The police yesterday said that they have started legal proceedings against three people in connection with investigations carried out into the awarding of a permit for an open air disco in Mistra.

In a statement, the police said its economic crimes unit has started cases against Philip Azzopardi, 57, of Naxxar and Anthony Mifsud, 50, of Birzebbuga over alleged private interests in an adjudication process.

A second case was opened against George Micallef, 48, of St Julian’s over alleged false declarations and violation of the Planning Development Act.

Mr Azzopardi and Mr Mifsud were members of the Malta Environment Planning Authority’s Planning Development Commission. Mr Micallef was a consultant with the Malta Tourism Authority.

The police statement did not mention Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, the Nationalist Party MP who was embroiled in the issue in the week preceding the election. Sources said that there was no case against him.
