Malta Independent Wednesday, 17 December 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The next concert in the Manoel Theatre’s New Composers series will be held at the Sala Isouard on Sunday at 5 pm.

The main composer featured is Albert Garzia, born in 1977 and who started playing the accordion at the age of seven. Later he studied piano and guitar, but his increasing interest in composition led him to read for a B.A. Honours in Music Studies at the University of Malta, successfully majoring in Composition.

He concurrently pursued a diploma course in Sacred Music, achieving his goal by majoring in Composition as well. Garzia is currently studying at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He won third prize in the Euromed Competition for Composers and his chamber and orchestral music has featured in a number of concerts, one of the latest being The Fishmonger at the Sala Isouard. Garzia has also written special music for children.

The concert programme consists of works in various formations by different composers, all Maltese. Eki by Mariella Cassar and Tidwir, by Mario Frendo are solo piano works and so are Garzia’s Rumanz and Wacky, Noisy Thing. His Pictures from Malta is for string quartet and violinist Sarah Spiteri will perform in the Sonata for Violin and Piano by Albert Pace. It will be two works for string quartet which will round off the concert. These are Heartstrings and Andante Religioso, both by Charles Camilleri.
