Diego scored late for Werder Bremen to draw with AC Milan 1-1 in the UEFA Cup round of 32 yesterday.
Filippo Inzaghi put Milan ahead after 36 minutes of the first-leg match. Diego equalized in the 84th.
David Beckham came off the bench in the 89th for Ronaldinho and Kaka did not even travel to Bremen. The home team dominated the match but could not convert the majority of chances, while Milan relied on infrequent fast breaks. Gianluca Zambrotta hit the crossbar of his own goal with a clearance attempt in injury time and Claudio Pizarro drove the rebound over the goal.
Inzaghi scored after a poor clearance by Clemens Fritz. Mathieu Flamini picked off Fritz's attempt to find his midfielders, charged down the right side and crossed to Inzaghi.
Inzaghi's header was blocked by Per Mertesacker but the ball fell back to Inzaghi and the striker slotted home.
Bremen had more possession early in the second half, too, and Hugo Almeida sent a free kick wide, before Dida had to stretch to save from Diego. Almeida then connected with a header at the far post but sent it wide. On the other side, Inzaghi and Flamini tested Wiese from long range.
In the 66th, Inzaghi hit the post after a counter attack. Dida then fumbled another free kick by Almeida, but Milan's defence cleared.
Bremen finally notched the equalizer when Almeida headed down to Diego, who controlled the ball with his chest and put the ball in with his left foot.
John Carew saved a 1-1 draw for Aston Villa against CSKA Moscow.
But Vagner Love's 14th-minute opener ensured CSKA has the away-goal advantage going into next week's return leg in the Russian capital.
CSKA had not played a competitive match since December and looked rusty in the early exchanges.
Love stunned the home fans by giving CSKA the lead. After playing a neat one-two with Yury Zhirkov, he sped past the Villa defenders before slotting in his ninth goal in seven UEFA Cup matches this season.
Carew could have levelled before halftime, but headed Ashley Young's cross over the bar. Craig Gardner missed chances after the break.
Alexei Berezutski could have doubled CSKA's lead after 67 minutes when he found himself with only goalkeeper Brad Guzan to beat, but he pushed his shot wide.
It proved a costly miss because Villa was back on level terms inside two minutes.
Gardner chased down a cross from Young which flew across the box, and turned it back to Norwegian striker Carew, who found the net with a first-time drive.
Anatoly Timoshchuk's first-half winner led defending champions Zenit St. Petersburg over Stuttgart 2-1.
New Zenit signing Szabolcs Huszti scored from a rebound just two minutes into the game. But Mario Gomez picked up a loose ball in midfield and moved down the right flank to score an equalizer from the edge of the box in the 15th.
Zenit struggled before Timoshchuk fired the winner from just outside the box in first-half stoppage time but dominated after the interval only to waste numerous scoring opportunities on a grassless frozen field at Petrovskiy Stadium.
A Raul Albiol own goal helped Dynamo Kiev hold Valencia to a 1-1 draw.
David Silva gave Valencia an early lead, scoring off Juan Mata's pass from the right eight minutes into the game.
In the 63rd minute, Artem Milevskiy fired the ball across the penalty area, where it struck Albiol and deflected past Valencia goalkeeper Cesar.
