Flyers and Fleur de Lys met twice in the league this season with Fleur de Lys winning these encounters with equal set scores of 3-2.
The third encounter followed in the same trend, offering entertaining volleyball to all spectators present at the Cottonera Sports Complex. Mandy Minuti and Louise Camilleri of Flyers were not available whilst Fleur-de-Lys had sisters Sandra and Daniela Bonnici together with Charlene Barbara missing. Flyers took the lead early on with Amanda Agius performing well.
These won the first and second sets 25-22 and 27-25.
Fleur-de-Lys, ably guided by their coach Michael Magro fought back and won the next two sets forcing a tie break. Flyers lost their setter Lindsay Cordina through injury and Fleur-de-Lys took full advantage of this loss.
Sara El Gasi powered her services effectively through the Flyers defence, tearing it down time after time.
Belinda Milton helped Fleur-de-Lys race to a four point lead in the fifth set but Flyers fought back to level the score at 12 each. A spirited Adriana Calleja helped Fleur de Lys win the remaining three crucial points and take all three points.
In the men’s category, Fleur-de Lys-Westen beat SouthEnd 3-1.It was a well balanced game with both teams playing good volleyball. Fleur-de-Lys Westen easily won the first set but SouthEnd fought back with good performances by Patrick Felice Pace and Malcolm St. John.
Fleur de Lys were too erratic and this led to SouthEnd levelling the set score. However, Fleur-de-Lys stepped up their game with good attacks by Paul Tonna and Jonathan Chetcuti as they were influential in their side winning the remaining two sets and the match 3-1.
The National Leagues are coming to an end.
In the ladies category, Paola Hibs Candy lead with a clear four points over second placed Fleur-de-Lys. It seems certain that this year, Hibs will win their sixth successive league title.
In the men’s league, Fleur-de-Lys Westen have a five-point advantage but second placed Valletta Mapei have a game in hand, and the opportunity to reduce this advantage.
