Round 4 of the national squash league came to an end recently with over 45 players competing in the open squash league, as the popularity of squash continues to increase.

Notwithstanding the lack of public courts, the national league, run by Malta Squash is proving to be more popular than ever as players of all levels compete against each other and try to work their way up to the top divisions.

The national league now has a total of eight divisions and sees players ranging in age from 12 to 65 competing.

In Div.1, Steve Rizzo (photo) knocked James Bonello Ghio off the top spot which he had enjoyed for the last three rounds. James lost a crucial game to Theresa Camilleri and this was enough to give Steve the chance to squeeze through to take top spot. James came in at number two, with just one point proving the difference between the two top seeds.

Carl Camilleri dominated the second division winning all his games 4-1 or better. Carl’s impressive reach and speed were key factors in his game as he progressively wore his opponents down.

Peter Wirth, also in great form, will join him in the first division. Peter’s fitness training for the half marathon paid dividends, particularly in the 3-2 hard won match over Dennis Attard Bondi. Meanwhile relative newcomer Malcolm Crabbe held his own and maintained his division two status.

The third to seventh divisions saw a number of close fought matches with players such as Malcolm Naudi and Matthew Borg impressing as they swiftly move up the ranks.
