Football – Bank Of Valletta Division III: Gharghur a step closer to promotion after easy victory over Luqa SA

As expected, Gharghur picked an easy win over Luqa in a match which they controlled throughout.

With this win, Gharghur consolidated their position at the head of the table and are now closer to a promotion in the second division.

Luqa went close early on with an Emanuel Cumbo freekick which just missed the up-right while Gharghur responded in the 16th minute with a shot from Ian Borg saved in corner by Paul Psaila.

In the 26th minute Gharghur threatened with an Ian Borg free kick which went wide. Gharghur opened the score in the 28th minute through ALAN SPITERI who netted in from close range.

In the 33rd minute, Gharghur scored their second goal through ANDRE AZZOPARDI who netted after Paul Psaila partially saved a Karl Vella Petroni shot.

Gharghur went close one minute into the second half but Karl Vella Petroni was anticipated by Paul Psaila.

In the 66th minute, Gharghur scored their third goal from a direct free kick taken by ANDRE AZZOPARDI.

Luqa’s reaction came three minutes later with a Jason Cutajar shot which went wide. Gharghur scored again in the 79th minute when a shot by Marvic Grech was partially saved by Paul Psaila with CARMEL MUSCAT scoring from the rebound.

Mdina K-Sirens 3-2

Sirens had a strong start with Glenn Gatt missing a sitter after just two minutes and in the eight minute a shot by Giovanni Galea was well saved by Jonathan Vella.

Mdina shared the exchanges and on two occasions they were denied by Debattista off attempts by James Vella and Adrian Galea.

Mdina opened the score on 32 minutes through a CLINT CARUANA free-kick and five minutes later Sirens gained a free-kick which was taken by Jonathan Grech with Vella bringing off a difficult save. Sirens were then again close through Giovanni Galea but in added time Mdina increased their lead with ADRIAN GALEA heading in from a Caruana corner-kick.

After the resumption Sirens were the better vteam and they were close through Giovanni Galea and Adrian Lanzon but on the hour Mdina increased their lead through an excellent volley by CLINT CARUANA following good work by Adrian Galea.

Sirens reduced the arrears seven minutes later with ALEXANDER BEZZINA heading in from a Patrick Barbara corner-kick. Then they wasted a clear opportunity through Glenn Gatt but six minutes from time they managed to score another goal through GIOVANNI GALEA.

Sirens continued to push forward but Mdina managed to hold on to their slender lead even though Sirens were very unlucky to hit the post through Alexander Bezzina in injury-time.

Qrendi-Ghaxaq F.C. 1-3

Ghaxaq took the lead after just eight minutes through a penalty given for a handling infringement by Qrendi’s defender Alex Mangion an converted by JOHAN ZAMMIT.

Qrendi’s reaction produced a shot by Robert Darmanin which was saved by Jonathan Agius and then they wasted a clear opportunity through Karl Carabott.

Gradually Ghaxaq regained the initiative and were denied on various occasions by Qrendi’s agile keeper Michael Carter, especially off attemots by Bjorn Dalli, Kim Caruana and Matthew Axiaq.

Three minutes before the break Qrendi were close to obtaining an equalising goal as a lob by Andrew Formosa was cleared off the goal line by Ghaxaq’s central defender Clayton Xuereb.

Four minutes into the second half Ghaxaq were once again denied by Carter off a close-range shot by Kim Caruana with Qrendi responding through a header by Ronald Spina which was cleared off the line by Francois Galea.

In the 55th minute Ghaxaq increased their lead with KIM CARUANA finishing off a good move by Louis Falzon and four minutes later MATTHEW AXIAQ made it 3-0 for Ghaxaq following a personal effort.

On 70 minutes Qrendi pulled a goal back through RONALD SPINA from a well-taken free-kick and late in the match they were again very close through Andrew Formosa and Sam Vella.

Section ‘B’

Santa Lucia-Kirkop U 2-0

Santa Lucia created the best opportunities and early on attempts by Liam Cutajar and Brian Chetcuti were well saved by Cardona.

Then a free-kick by Jason Galea and a shot by Emanuel Cutajar finished just wide with Kirkop replying through Daniel Scicluna who headed just wide from close-range.

At the other end the Saints created two goal scoring opportunities through Malcolm Tirchett but they finally managed to take the lead on 42 minutes through LIAM CUTAJAR who took advantage from an indecision by Kirkop’s custodian Cardona.

Four minutes into the second period the Saints made it 2-0 through a half-volley by LIAM CUTAJAR, one of the best goals seen this season at the Centenary Stadium.

At the other end Kirkop were close through two attempts by Albert Busuttil which were well saved by Fulvio Azzopardi and a header by Daniel Scicluna which just missed the target.

In the 82nd minute the Saints missed a clear goal scoring opportunity through Brian Chetcuti and late in the match Kirkop replied through Albert Busuttil who had two shots which ended just wide off the near post.

Attard-Mtarfa 3-0

Attard were close early on through Daniel Haber but they broke the deadlock in the 12th minute through JOSEF AXISA with Mtarfa’s keeper Kurt Gatt being deceived through a deflection by his own team mate Roderick Sammut.

Attard were then denied by Gatt off a point-blank shot by James Anastasi and on another occasion a Gwyn Vassallo free-kick just missed the target.

In the 28th minute Mtarfa wasted a clear opportunity through Giorgio Cumbo and just before the end of the first-half Attard were close to increasing their lead as a shot by Josef Axisa ended just high over the bar.

A minute into the second-half, Mtarfa went close through Giorgio Cumbo with Attard respondoing through dangerous attempts by Daniel Haber and Josef Axisa.

In the 66th minute Attard’s custodian Tyron Spiteri twice denied Mtarfa the equaliser with fine saves to deny Mario Stivala and Giorgio Cumbo but in a swift counter-attack in the 75th minute Attard sealed the issue through JOSEF AXISA following a personal effort.

Late in the match Axisa could have notched his hat-trick but he shot wide infront of an open goal. A minute from time Attard scored a third goal through an excellent CLIVE LANZON free-kick for a 3-0 final scoreline.
