David Galea (Qormi KIA Cycling Club) and Stephania Magri (Melita Pedal Power Cycling Club) emerged as the top Maltese cyclists during the 15th edition of the Tour of Malta. David Galea finished sixth overall in the men’s category and top Maltese cyclist in 5 hours 29 minutes and 13 seconds. Etienne Bonello (Greens CC) was seventh overall and second Maltese cyclist with a time of 5 hours 31 minutes and 13 seconds. Third Maltese cyclist was Maurice Formosa (Melita Pedal Power CC) who finished 10th overall in 5 hours 43 minutes and 38 seconds.
Italian cyclists won the top three placings in the men’s category. Francesco Guccione (Ballatore) won the Tour, followed by Massimo Rubino and Francesco Pizzo (both Squadra Electro System) in second and third place respectively.
In the ladies category, Stephania Magri (Melita Pedal Power CC) finished seventh overall and first Maltese in 4 hours 20 minutes and 27 seconds. Marie Claire Aquilina (Greens CC) was 11th overall and second Maltese girl in 4 hours 31 minutes and 40 seconds. Marika Micallef (Birkirkara St Joseph) finished 13th overall and third Maltese in 4 hours 45 minutes and 7 seconds.
The female category was dominated by the Noord Holland duo of Anne De Wildt and Claudia Koster, followed in third place by Iona Sewell from the English team Squadra Donne.
The Tour was concluded yesterday with a bike ride which started and finished at the Sliema Ferries. It was followed by the official presentation ceremony conducted by the Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs, George Pullicino, accompanied by John Zammit and Marthese Caruana, Chairman and Secretary respectively of the organising committee.
