St George’s strapped a dramatic equaliser on 92 minutes with an Iro Curmi strike to stop the loosing streak and gain a point after four consecutive defeats.
For St Patrick it was another disappointing result, the fifth match without a win as the former leaders loose further ground with the top teams.
St Patrick looked set for a comfortable win as they dominated completely the first half and built a two-goal cushion. But St George’s had other ideas as they managed to equalise in a two-minute burst before behind to an Anizoba beauty. However justice was done in injury time when Iro Curmi scored a deserved equaliser.
St Patrick dominated from the early stages going close on two instances in the opening six minutes of the match. After only two minutes Peter Anizoba headed over the bar when well placed. Four minutes later St Patrick created the best move of the first half with Gary Inguanez passing towards Beppe Muscat who brought the best of Thomas Galea who made a great save.
After this initial fury St Patrick slowed down their tempo and St George’s shared the exchanges in midfield. On fifteen minutes St George’s went close to a surprise lead when St Patrick defender Matthew Fleri Soler almost committed an own goal in an attempt to clear.
From the resultant corner taken by Mark Gauci, David Cassar misjudged the flight of the ball but the ball went inches wide. On 18 minutes St Patrick took the lead when off a Simon Zerafa freekick, Peter Anizoba nipped in to beat Thomas Galea from close range.
St Patrick were in full command of the match as the Pioneers had no reply to their opponents’ superiority.
Matthew Fleri Soler could have added a second on the half hour but his header sailed over the bar. On 35 minutes St Patrick doubled the score when Heathcliff Schemberi handled the ball inside the penalty area and from the resultant penalty Thomas Caruana scored with a low shot.
St George’s were better in the second half with Sciberras testing Cassar with a freekick and the same Cassar bringing the house down when he saved Curmi’s shot from the rebound.
On 73 minutes St George’s were back in the match when Mark Gauci headed home from close range following a Sciberras freekick. Two minutes later St George’s were on level terms when substitute Josef Dalli made his way on the right before crossing towards Glenn Bonello who headed home.
Five minutes later St. Patrick were back in the lead when Peter Anizoba fired in the top corner of the net from the edge of the area for a gem of a goal. Seven minutes from time
St George’s went very close when a Glenn Bonello shot was blocked by Pullicino on the goal line.
On 92 minutes St George’s managed to save the match when Iro Curmi first timed beautifully from the edge of the area with the ball finishing past a helpless Cassar.
