Football – Bank Of Valletta Division III: Fgura win close match against Qrendi

Section A

Fgura-Qrendi 1-0

This was a balanced match with Fgura going close early on in the match through Matthew Spiteri and Claudio Pace. They were then denied by the Qrendi keeper off a close-range effort by Spiteri with Qrendi gradually sharing the exchanges.

In the 35th minute Fgura lost their goalkeeper Jesmond Lia who was sent off after handling the ball outside the penalty area and he was replaced between the posts by his fellow defender Clint Ellul.

In the initial stages of the second half, Qrendi were denied by Ellul who brought off a fine save off an attempt by Ronald Spina.

In the 70th minute Fgura gained a penalty for a foul by Andrew Xuereb on Jason Gauci but Clint Ellul’s shot from the spot was well saved by the Qrendi goalkeeper Roderick Mascena.

However Fgura still managed to score three minutes later through JASON GAUCI following a personal effort with Qrendi going close to an equalizer two minutes from time through Ronald Spina.

Luqa SA-Gudja 0-0

Gudja dictated the proceedings throughout the first-half and early on they were close with Dalzier Zammit heading just wide from a Leslie Burke free-kick.

They were then twice denied by Psaila off efforts by Leslie Burke and John Schembri and on 25 minutes they wasted a clear goal scoring opportunity with Zammit hitting wide when all alone infront of goal.

At the other end Luqa created a dangerous opportunity through Malcolm Psaila.

After the change of ends Gudja increased the pressure and early on were denied by Psaila off a point-blank shot by Elton Bugeja.

Then attempts by Dean Agius and Elton Bugeja just missed the target with Luqa responding through a Mark Said personal effort with his angled shot finishing just wide. Late in the match Gudja were once again very close through Dalzier Zammit.

Section B

Mtarfa-Kirkop 0-2

Mtarfa went close early on through a two efforts by Mario Stivala which were neutralised by the Kirkop keeper Stephen Mizzi but they managed to open the score on 28 minutes through JONATHAN GRIMA who shot in from close range.

Kirkop were close again in the 45th minute as a Micheal Theuma shot was saved by Kurt Gatt. In the 48th minute Jonathan Grima missed a clear opportunity and in the 66th minute Kirkop were awarded a penalty when Clayton Scicluna fouled Kevin Farrugia, but Tyron Bonnici shot wide from the spot.

However Kirkop managed to assure themselves of the three points when they managed to increase their lead five minutes from time through TYRON BONNICI who made amends for his earlier penalty miskick.

Zejtun C-Attard 0-0

Zejtun were the better team during the first-half and after six minutes they protested for a penalty when Jean Paul Abela appeared to have been pushed in the penalty area.

Attard replied through Andrew Agius whose shot was saved by Fardell with Zejtun wasting a clear opportunity in the 23rd minute through Glenn Azzopardi Busuttil.

In the 32nd minute Zejtun were unlucky as a shot by Sergio Schembri bounced off the crossbar with Attard suffering a blow six minutes later when Chris Micallef was sent off for intentional handling.

Just before the break Zejtun were denied by Spiteri off a strong attempt by Brian Grech. Attard gained the initiative in the early stages of the second half and were twice denied by Fardell off free-kicks taken by Jonathan Saliba and Clive Lanzon.

On another occasion Josef Axisa headed just wide with Zejtun coming back through dangerous efforts by Vince Camilleri and Andy Portelli.

Attard wasted a clear opportunity through Jude Bugeja with Zejtun gaining a penalty in the 82nd minute for a handling infringement by Daniel Haber. The penalty was taken by Vince Camilleri but was well saved by Spiteri.

The Attard keeper was again on hand in the closing minutes with an excellent save to deny Andy Portelli.
