60 Second Interview - Brian Cefai

Malta Independent Sunday, 3 May 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Brian Cefai is one of the few Maltese leading soloists who gained recognition for his talents not only on our island but also overseas. He studied with Maltese and foreign voice coaches and in 1984 was presented with the Accademia Del Mediterraneo Award, after which he completed a three-year course with his Bulgarian tutor Blagovesta Karnobatlova Dobreva. Few people actually know that Brian was initially a double-bass player. After studying with Mro Paolo Nani, Brian later continued his studies in voice coaching, pedagogy and singing at the Royal Academy of Music (with Derek Hammond Stroud) as well as conducting at Warwick University (with Sir Colin Touchin). To date, Brian Cefai is the only Maltese tenor who has obtained a Fellowship in Singing. This he achieved with Honours. In 1990 Brian founded the Amadeus Chamber Choir and has been its director ever since. He is one of the few musicians in Malta who has established himself not only as a tenor but also as a

conductor.

Brian Cefai is playing the part of Sir Danvers Carew, Emma’s father in Masquerade’s latest production Jekyll & Hyde The Musical, which will be held on 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17 May at Teatru Manoel in Valletta.
