Maltese snooker player Alex Borg (above) has been drawn to play World no. 3 Shaun Murphy when the draw for the Sangsom 6 red World Grand Prix 2009 was made earlier this week.
This tournament will be played in Bangkok, Thailand between 7 and 12 July and 48 players from around the world will be taking part.
Borg has qualified to play in Bangkok after coming through a qualifying tournament which was played in March in St.Petersburg, Russia.
Amongst the players who are taking part are five world champions who are the current champion John Higgins, Shaun Murphy, Mark Williams, Ken Doherty and Peter Ebdon. The field also includes last year’s winner Ricky Walden, James Wattana and the popular Jimmy White. The 48 players were divided into eight groups of six players each with the top four in each group qualifying into the last 32 knock-out stage.
Borg is in Group B together with Shaun Murphy of England, Aditya Mehta of India, James Wattana (Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm) of Thailand, Nigel Bond of England and Akar Soe Yin of Myanmar. Borg’s first match will be on 7 July at 10am (local time) against Akar Soe Yin while on the same day at 3pm he will play Nigel Bond. Matches in the group stages will be over the best of nine frames.
