Tennis : Matthew Asciak Climbs up 300 places in ATP Ranking list

Malta's no 1 tennis player Matthew Asciak climbed up 300 places in the ATP Ranking list after winning 2 more ATP Points in Cairo bringing his total to 3 ATP Points.

In the qualifying round of the first tournament Matthew had a walk over against Mooney from Switzerland and then lost against Huber from Egypt 6-4, 6-3 in the final round of qualifying. Being the player with the highest ranking out of all the players who lost in the final round of qualifying Matthew got in the main draw and beat Dutto from Italy 6-4, 6-3. Dutto had earlier beaten the no 1 seed in the qualifying rounds. In the second round Matthew lost against Rachidi of Morocco 6-4, 7-5. Rachidi has a world ATP Ranking of 800.

In the second tournament Matthew had a bye into the second round where he played played Nazir from Egypt and won 6-4, 6-3. In the final round of qualifying Matthew played against Altmann from Germany. Altmann is considered as one of the best College players in the USA. The local player lost 6-3, 6-3 after a hard fought match. Again Matthew made it into the main draw as lucky loser where he beat Mounir from Egypt 6-1, 6-1. He eventually lost to the world's no. 350 player from Egypt Maamoun 6-1, 6-1.

For these two tournaments Matthew was accompanied by Bradley Callus a national team player. This was Bradley's first experience of international tennis. Matthew and Bradley had a very good doubles win in the second week when they beat two world ranked players 6-4, 7-5 in the main draw. They lost in the second round to the eventual winners Altmann and Beidas.

With the two points won in Cairo Matthew climbed up 300 places and now occupies the 1450 position in the ATP list. Matthew will probably be playing three more tournaments in Greece in September.
