Alejandro Valverde (photo) of Spain has won the Spanish Vuelta while Andre Greipel took the final stage from Rivas-Vaciamadrid to central Madrid yesterday.
The 29-year-old Caisse D’Epargne rider proved the most consistent racer throughout the 21 stage race which began in Assen, Netherlands on Aug. 29.
Samuel Sanchez of Spain was second overall, 55 seconds behind, while Australia’s Cadel Evans finished third, one minute, 32 seconds back.
Greipel won the 21st and final stage, a 110.2 kilometre ride from Rivas-Vaciamadrid to central Madrid in three hours, 11 minutes, 55 seconds.
