The Maltese girls have reached the final in this prestugious tournament after two convincing wins against Estonia and hosts Poland
In the first encounter Malta No 1 Annabelle Olivieri Monroe played against Aliis Allas in a very close match which the Maltese girl won 3-0. Johanna Rizzo was up next against Reede Koni and had little problems in defeating the Estonian 3-0. Theresa Brousson finished off Estonia’s number 2 with a convincing win, putting Malta in the semi-final against the hosts, Poland.
In the afternoon game against Poland in front of a huge crowd of supporters, Annabelle played her best match to defeat Poland’s number 1 girl 3-0. Johanna Rizzo also won by the same scoreline 3-0 - against Anne Skorska.
With this win Malta was in the final with Theresa playing the final match in a dead rubber match which finished 2-0 for the Maltese girl.
Thus the Golden Ladies have not yet dropped a set in this tournament.
The Men needed at least two games from their encounter but saw the quarter finals slip away from their grip in the morning encounter against Croatia.
Bard Hindle beat Filip Madjaric three games to love in less than 20 minutes. Mark Lupi was on and after a hard-fought match which lasted over an hour, the Maltese boy conceded the game 3-2.
Malta needed a good match from Bernard Bugeja in the last match with one game each. Bernard played a fantastic match but had to bow down to a superior Vetran Svonia. Malta then played Gibraltar in the afternoon winning the encounter 2-1 with Hindle beating Carl Gomez 3-0 (Brad has to yet concede a set in this tournamnent), Mark Lupi won convincingly against Mark Tewkebury 3-1 and Bernard Bugeja lost the final match 3-2 after leading 2-0.
The men had to play two more matches yesterday against Isle of Men and Poland.
