San Gwann 1
Mqabba 1
Ten-man San Gwann earned a deserved draw against Mqabba in an interesting and exciting match. Mqabba were the better team in the first half, but San Gwann played the better football in the second to deserve the point.
When the Saints lost Mario Caruana15 minutes from time, Mqabba stormed forward but could not break the deadlock.
For both teams it was the first point this season after suffering defeats in their opening match.
Mqabba were the better team in the first minutes as they pushed San Gwann in their own penalty area. Mqabba started without Claudio Calleja, and Martin Anastasi, making way for Glenn Barry and Wilson Caushi who, in the first match, were only used as substitutes.
Mqabba took a deserved lead on 10 minutes when John Paul Muscat pounced on a short defensive clearance and fired a hard drive past goalkeeper Justin Spiteri.
San Gwann started to play better after this early dominance by Mqabba. On 18 minutes Alan Borg shot slightly over the bar and two minutes later San Gwann won a penalty when Pierre Grima floored Clint Gatt inside the area. From the penalty spot Lee Cumbo's shot was well saved by Kris Calleja.
On the resumption Mqabba lost John Paul Muscat injured who was replaced by Christopher Farrugia. On 56 minutes an Aboulezz freekick slammed against the crossbar with the San Gwann players claiming that the ball went over the goal line. However from the resultant corner taken by Aboulezz, Miguel Francica headed home from close range.
Minutes later Mqabba went close to regaining to lead when Shaun Magro had an impressive run but his final shot hit the side netting.
Fifteen minutes from time San Gwann were reduced to ten men when Mario Caruana was sent off. Mqabba piled up the pressure in the last part in search of the winner. They were unlucky on 78 minutes when two consecutive headers by Glenn Barry were cleared off the line by Leeroy Bonnet.
An own goal by Ryan Mifsud a minute into the second half was enough for Mosta to register their second consecutive win of the season beating St Patrick 1-0.
It was a deserved victory for Mosta over a rather disappointing St Patrick side who failed to produce scoring opportunities throughout the match.
St Patrick had their first attempt at goal when Jurgen Farrugia's shot from the edge of the area went slightly over the bar.
Mosta's danger came from two headers by striker Lyden Micallef. In his first attempt his header sailed over the bar and on 35 minutes he connected beautifully to a Bryan Agius freekick but his header was tipped into a corner by goalkeeper Mintoff.
Mosta forged ahead immediately on the resumption when off a Mark Briggs cross, defender Ryan Mifsud fired into his own net in an attempt to clear.
The Saints failed to produce a decent reaction and Mosta could have wrapped up the match when Julian Vella failed to beat Mintoff from five metres.
Near the end St Patrick tried a desperate assault on the Mosta fort but only came close with a Matthew Fleri Soler header, as Mosta defended their valuable lead with ease.
