Football: Michael Mifsud Says there are no contacts with clubs from abroad

Malta Independent Saturday, 5 December 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Michael Mifsud is hoping that the January transfer window will provide him with a new opportunity to join a club and re-start his footballing career.

Mifsud is still without a club this season after having finished his loan period with Barnsley FC of the English Championship at the end of last season.

Early in summer, reports in the British press suggested that the Malta striker was the target of several clubs that included Leeds United and Notts County, but a move never materialised.

At present, he is training with the national team in Malta, under the charge of national coach John Buttigieg and his assistant Carmel Busuttil.

Rumours that he was soon to join Valletta FC were quashed by City president Victor Sciriha earlier this week. He told The Malta Independent that the deal with the player had fallen through some months ago (in summer) as the citizens could not meet Mifsud’s demands.

The player himself told this newspaper yesterday that there was no truth in some reports which indicated that he was about to join Valletta FC.

In a short telephone interview Mifsud confirmed he was training alone here in Malta and also said there were no contacts with other clubs from abroad so far.

In summer Mifsud said that his future playing career was not in Malta, indicating that he was still hoping to find a club abroad.
