Happy Chinese New Year: 2010 Valletta Chinese Spring Festival On 8 and 9 February

China Cultural Centre and Valletta Local Council will once again join forces in presenting the fourth edition of the events entitled ‘Happy Chinese New Year – 2010 Valletta Chinese Spring Festival’ to share the joy and happiness of the Chinese New Year of the Tiger on the lunar calendar of 2010. The Beijing Art Group composed of 30 outstanding artists selected from the most established and prestigious national cultural entities in China such as China National Acrobatic Troupe, Beijing Dance Academy and Beijing Opera and Dance-Drama Company will be presenting the state-of-the-art Chinese performing arts to our Maltese friends.

On Monday, 8 February at 10.30am, an opening performance featuring lion dance, Chinese Kungfu and puppetry show will be held at the newly renovated St George’s Square in Valletta. It will then be followed by fancy parade along the Republic Street up to the Upper Barrakka Garden. It will be an opportunity that one can not afford to miss as the variety of the wonderful Chinese folk arts will definitely be a feast for the eyes.

On Tuesday, 9 February at 8pm, the artists will proudly present at the Mediterranean Conference Centre the crème of China’s performing arts, such as acrobatics, martial arts, Chinese classical dance, music etc. It will be a high calibre celebration of Chinese culture as most of the artists are experienced and well-established and have been invited to perform in a lot of countries in Asia, Europe and America and they represent the national level in their fields.

The highlight of the event includes ‘Balancing on Single Hand’, the once Golden Award winning acrobatic programme at the International Juvenile Art Festival in Italy, and Chinese Kungfu programmes where one can marvel through the jaw-dropping stunts and amazing presentations of various disciplines of Chinese martial arts at the mystical power and strength human beings are capable of possessing.

On Saturday, 13 February at 8pm, the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Valletta will host a Chinese New Year Dinner with fireworks to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Tiger.

Until 30 March, the Exhibition of Oil Paintings of Contemporary Chinese students with more than 50 excellent works of talented graduates from the prestigious academies of fine arts in China created over the past four years will be on at the China Cultural Centre in 173 Melita Street, Valletta.

2010 Valletta Chinese Spring Festival marks the fourth of its kind after the huge success in the previous years. The event is under the patronage of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth & Sport and the Chinese Embassy in Malta, with great support from the MTA,the MCC and the Grand Hotel Excelsior.
