Court: Victoria Petrol station thefts

Two men were yesterday allowed bail by the Gozo Magistrates Court after pleading not guilty to a series of thefts from a petrol station in Victoria.

Magistrate Edwina Grima heard Carmel Hartley, 39, and Matthew Portelli, 24, both residing in San Gwann, being charged with theft on several occasions, voluntarily damaging the safes of the automatic pump machines and relapsing.

The two men allegedly stole cash from the petrol station and its automatic machines to the detriment of Maurice Borg on four occasions between 13 August and 18 October.

The value of the cash stolen exceeded €2,329.37 on the night between 13 and 14 August. The amount stolen on the second, third and fourth occasions did not exceed €2,329.37 each time.

Hartley and Portelli were granted bail against a personal guarantee of €5,000.

The case was put off to 18 November.

Police Inspector Louise Camilleri prosecuted.
