Simon Zammit who plays for Jesmond Sporting Club, Hamrun won the first snooker ranking tournament of the season organised by the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association (MBSA) which came to an end on Friday evening at Mount Carmel Band Club, Gzira when he beat Arthur Cachia of St. Catherine Band Club, Zurrieq 6-4 in the final.
At the end of the match, Anton Abela, MBSA General Secretary, presented the trophies to the finalists.
On the MBSA provisional ranking list, Alex Borg is leading with 2,750 points followed by Duncan Bezzina with 2,400 and Simon Zammit with 1,835 points.
National Championships 2010/11
Meanwhile on Saturday the draw for the national championships was made with over 170 players registering to compete in the eight different categories including the highest category, the Premier Division.
Again this year the championships will include those for the Under 21s, Under 16s and the Masters.
The groups for the Premier Division are:
Group A: Duncan Bezzina, Arthur Cachia, Ivan Rizzo, Mark Saffrett and Andre Pace.
Group B: Simon Zammit, Marius Gatt, Aaron Busuttil, Bruce Licari and Mario Cutajar.
Group C: Clayton Castaldi, Frans Mintoff, Richard Lewis, Jesmond Schembri and Stephen Mangion.
Group D: Alex Borg, Mario Brincat, Duncan Pisani, Philip Ciantar and Tony Mifsud.
The first round matches will start on Thursday 24 November.
