THEATRE

Bariona

3, 4, 5 December at the Theatre, St. James Cavalier, Valletta at 8pm

By Jean Paul Sartre. A Theatre Encore Production.

Written by Jean Paul Sartre, Directed by Tyrone Grima

Bariona is Sartre’s first play, a work that does not sit comfortably with the rest of his works as his atheism grapples with the element of hope that is born with the coming of Christ, and touches upon the mystery of humanity. In this play, which is a Christmas play for believers and non-believers, the spotlight turns away from narrating the events that see Christ coming into the world. Rather, the central characters are ordinary people, struggling with their human existence, and reacting to the news of the birth of the Messiah. ‘Bariona’, a village chief, loses all hope for a more prosperous future and condemns his people to their own extermination as his own wife announces her first pregnancy. Against this despair, an angel brings them news of the birth of Christ. This news becomes the lifeline for villagers who want to perpetuate life against all odds, and for parents who continue to want to bring children into the world. Tickets: €12/€10.

MUSIC

X Cowell to Cage - American Contemporary Music

Friday 3 December at the Music Room, St James Cavalier at 8pm

Equinox Trio will be performing American works at St James Cavalier’s music room. They will take you on a journey of American 20th century and contemporary compositions for this trio combination. The programme will open with Charles Ives’ Largo composed in 1901. Premiered in 1951, it is an unbending, miniature representation of many of Ives’ compositions. Dirge: 11.09.01 by Charles Camilleri, as the name implies, was borne out of the tragedy that occurred on 11 September 2001. In this work, the composer tries to capture the sounds and emotions engulfing him at that particular moment. Three Irish Legends for the piano solo by Henry Cowell consist of The Tides of Manaunaun, Hero Sun and The Voice of Lir. X by Scott McAllister is a work for clarinet and piano inspired by the ‘grunge’ style of music. The music of Nirvana and Alice and Chains was a particular influence on this piece. X is in three movements and uses resonance and non-traditional trills. This work, with its explosive driving sections and contrasting psychedelic passages, represents the energy and emotions of the ‘X’ generation. Equinox Trio features pianist Tricia Dawn Williams, clarinettist Lino Pirotta and violinist Tatjana Chircop. Equinox recorded Mouse in the Machine and Constellations by Ruben Zahra released in 2009 on the CD entitled Arabesque. This recital is being sponsored by the Embassy of The United States of America.

Tickets €10.

GO Teatru Unplugged 13

3, 4, 5 December at Teatru Manoel at 8.30pm

Teatru Unplugged has become a fixture in the Maltese culture scene since it was first launched in 1998. This ’concert with a difference’ set out to provide a platform for up and coming local artists, and has been doing so for the past 13 years.

Among this year’s performers are Chasing Pandora, Beige, Renzo Spiteri Terra Project featuring Peter Grech, Fraser, The Blast and introducing Megan Balzan. Pawlu Borg Bonaci front man of Fakawi will present the show. This years’ edition of Go Teatru Unplugged will stick to its winning formula and present a number of short performances of diverse music genres. For some this concert will represent their debut in the local music scene, for some a return, whilst for others a new opportunity to shine in Malta’s most beautiful theatre. When Teatru Unplugged was first staged at our national theatre thirteen years ago, it was a risk which both the producers, as well as the theatre management, took. The risk paid off and nowadays The Manoel welcomes a younger and more diverse audience. Over the past decade rock and pop concerts have become a regular occurrence at the Manoel, however, thirteen years ago the theatre mainly served as backdrop for more classical events. Tickets cost €8, €12 and €15 and can be purchased online
