Silvia Eriglobulin – Iron and folic acid supplement

Malta Independent Sunday, 6 November 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Iron is a mineral that the body needs to produce red blood cells. Without enough iron the body cannot produce the number of normal red blood cells needed to keep in good health.

Iron (Fe) is also necessary for the function of haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Haemoglobin is the primary protein found in red blood cells and represents about two thirds of the body’s iron. The body recycles iron. When red blood cells die, the iron in them is returned to the bone marrow to be used again in new red blood cells.

Moreover, iron is needed for proper muscle and organ function. Iron is an integral part of many proteins and enzymes that maintain good health. In the body, iron is needed to form myoglobin, a protein in muscle cells, and it is essential for certain enzymes that drive the body’s chemical reactions.

What may be the consequences of iron deficiency? Lack of iron leads to unusual tiredness and fatigue, known as anaemia. This can affect the function of numerous organ systems. Iron deficiency anaemia is the final stage of iron depletion. In other words an anaemic person is running out of iron reserves, a dangerous stage that could lead to stomach ulcers or colon cancer. If the body has sufficient iron to meet its needs, the remainder is stored for later use in the bone marrow, liver and spleen.

The natural sources of iron are meat, fish, poultry, lentils, beans, leaf vegetables, chickpeas, strawberries and farina. But if these are not readily available or if cooking them on a regular basis is out of the question, Silvia Eriglobulin of Alta Care Laboratoires with iron and folic acid can help.

Folic acid deficiency is one of the most common of all vitamin deficiencies. Although it occurs in both males and females, folic acid deficiency anaemia most often affects women over the age of 30. It becomes increasingly common as age impedes the body’s ability to absorb folic acid, a water-soluble vitamin that is manufactured by intestinal bacteria and stored for a short time in the liver. A healthy adult needs at least 400mcg of folic acid every day. Requirements at least double during pregnancy and increase by 50% when a woman is breastfeeding.

Silvia Eriglobulin Iron + Folic Acid is recommended during pregnancy and for people who do not get the recommended quantity of iron and folic acid. It is especially indicated during menstruation and also helps stimulate physical and mental abilities.

Silvia Eriglobulin is produced in France by Alta Care Laboratoires and is available in tablet and syrup format in all pharmacies. It is to be kept out of reach of children.
