Gymnastics is a graceful and artistic sport requiring a combination of strength, suppleness, and muscle coordination. At the KMS Skolasport in Kirkop, gymnastic instructors drill the practising gymnasts with routines that develop muscular flexibility, strength and stamina, but also make them aware of their posture and gracefulness.
Brian Zammit, KMS Skolasport Head Coach at the KMS Sports Complex in Kirkop said, “Gymnastics is, in fact, one of the most challenging sports. Though the physical aspect is important, the mental concentration plays a crucial role in gymnastics. One has to rigorously train the mind to perform different sets of skills in gymnastics.” he added.
KMS Skolasport gymnastic sessions are designed to help the children with the development of their coordination and flexibility skills. The primary focus is on gross motor development as well as learning the importance of stretching and movement. The participants gradually move on to learn basic tumbling, balance, and upper body strength with the use of a balance beam, floor exercise and a vault.
Gymnastics sessions offered by Kunsill Malti għall-iSport as part of the Skolasport Programme, are held every Wednesday afternoon at the St Benedict College, Boys Secondary School in Kirkop. The 90-minute sessions are subdivided into different work areas with personalised coaching covering floor work, beam, vault, and trampoline, thus complementing every participant’s physical ability and advancement.
