The Valletta Council yesterday welcomed the European Capital of Culture 2018 designation it was awarded on Friday.

Valletta Mayor Dr Alexiei Dingli yesterday said he was “extremely satisfied” with the title and that he believes it will elevate the treasured capital city to new heights within the European cultural scene, as well as offer unlimited opportunities to our children, who by 2018 will be young adults.

Dr Dingli also said that he believes the achievement “will ultimately result in the revival of the city, vibrant with people, culture and activities all year round”.

“For this to materialise work has to start immediately; we need to roll up our sleeves to turn this dream into reality. The next few years will thus see the continuation of this commitment through a stepping up of programmes and projects, all designed to leave an indelible mark on our city and our country for years to come.

“Everyone is invited to join the city of Valletta on this journey and share the cultural vibe and unhindered imagination that will culminate in the celebrations in 2018.”

He added, “This unique achievement is the ideal catalyst for Valletta to complete the restoration of the city’s cultural infrastructure, but will also ensure that this great historic city will continue to welcome visitors to this tiny but vibrant island, packed with ancient treasures and most of all enable the myriad of local talents to flourish and soar to new heights with the opportunities now made available through this successful bid.”
