Malta Independent Friday, 26 April 2013, 10:56 Last update: about 13 years ago

The XVII Flamenco Festival this year included six representatives from Alegria Academia, Malta, including the scholarship winner, Justine Lanzon and one student from Alegria India. The festival was held between 22 February and 9 March. This event is held in the popular town of Jerez de la Frontera, famous for its sherry and horses.

“It has become an annual event for us,” says Ingrid Sciberras who once again led the group. “For a duration of two weeks, Jerez becomes alive with Flamenco dancers from all over the world. They come to attend courses and indulge in daily performances and lectures given by the greatest maestros of Flamenco dance, song and guitar, including Farruquito, Maria Del Mar Moreno, Antonio Marquez, La Truco, Eva la Yerbabuena and Rocio Molina, among many others.”

The eight representatives from Malta and India attended workshops with Manuel Liñan, Marco Flores and Jose Galvan. They also participated in a Flash Mob organised by the festival and led by Maria del Mar Moreno, who will be performing at the Manoel Theatre on 25 and 26 May. Maria has also won the Spectators' Prize for best Performer of the Festival. Alegria Academia has been participating in this festival for the last 13 years and is well represented each year.
