'Meadow: A Warrior's Heart / Qalb ta' Gwerrier'
Author: Keith Spiteri
Pages: 300
A pioneering new book by local author Keith Spiteri is set to make history in the Maltese literary and voluntary scene. Spanning over more than 300 pages and 75,000 words, this full-colour publication is the first of its kind in Malta - a comprehensive monument to the bond between humans and animals. Available in separate English and Maltese editions, all profits will be donated directly to support animals in need.
The book chronicles the journey of Meadow, the beloved Brittany Spaniel with gentle eyes and a distinct pink mark on his nose, which went viral on social media two years ago.
A unique perspective on trauma, injustice, and healing
Uniquely, Spiteri has written the book entirely from Meadow's perspective, as if the dog himself is narrating his own life story. Over more than 300 pages, it charts a profound therapeutic journey aimed at finding peace and healing through powerful, raw, and honest emotions.
While a must-read for animal lovers, this book is equally written for those who aren't. It extends far beyond the special bond between a person and their pet, exploring deeply relatable human emotions. It addresses personal traumas, past wounds, and the heavy anger brought about by injustice. Yet, through Meadow's unconditional love, it ultimately transforms into a powerful story about perseverance, the strength to move forward, and the difficult path towards healing and forgiveness.
Esteemed local contributors
The book's unique status is further cemented by profound insights and contributions from prominent Maltese figures across literature, medicine, and psychiatry.
The book opens with an insightful foreword by Dr Sergio Grech, respected researcher and president of L-Akkademja tal-Malti, setting a rich cultural and literary tone.
A poignant, compassionate medical and expert perspective is provided in an opening testimonial by Dr Christa Spiteri, dedicated veterinary surgeon.
Readers will find a unique and deeply academic interlude titled Anatomy of the Bond, penned by Dr Anthony Dimech, consultant psychiatrist and process-based cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist, exploring the deep psychological connection between humans and animals.
From a sacred ceremony to a lifelong legacy
Meadow's story began on 19 December 2021 with a moment that felt like destiny. The stray spaniel walked directly into a medieval chapel that was full of people, precisely while the Caritas Tal-Ibwar Adolescent Therapeutic Centre was organising a special ceremony for the youths in their care. For Spiteri, who works as an educator at the therapeutic centre and was present at the ceremony, it was love at first sight. The dog was eventually adopted by him and named Meadow - a tribute to his rescue location, as Ibwar translates to meadows in English.
A visual journey and a project built on giving back
The book features beautiful photography that subtly mirrors the narrative arc - as the story draws closer to Meadow's passing, the images over more than 300 pages gradually fade from vibrant colour to black and white. It also features an interactive QR code linking readers directly to videos of Meadow in action.
The initiative is deeply rooted in community support. When Meadow desperately needed funding for his expensive, specialised daily treatments, the public responded with overwhelming generosity. The Meadow Project is a direct way of giving back to society. By purchasing this book, readers are directly helping rescued animals which, just like Meadow, need financial support to receive the highest level of care.
Turning tragedy into awareness
Tragically, on 23 February 2024, Meadow passed away at just over two years of age from kidney failure caused by sandfly leishmania. Beyond a personal tribute, Spiteri offers a transparent, honest, and highly emotional account of navigating the complexities of canine illness and loss. The book turns profound personal grief into a vital campaign for increased canine health awareness, regular screening, and life-saving fundraising for voluntary animal causes across the Maltese islands.
