Puppetry of the Hili

Malta Independent Sunday, 2 June 2013, 18:37 Last update: about 13 years ago

Steve Hili is proud to be a Maltese man. But becoming the man he is today was not an easy task.

Audiences will be intrigued to find out the reasons why in his latest show, Sex Confessions of a Maltese Man, a theatrical experience that chronicles the sexual development of the 30-something Hili from conception to teenage brat to the creature he is today.

Hili has made his mark on the Maltese pop culture with his radio shows on the now defunct Capital Radio and, more recently, on the Big Breakfast on XFM, as well as with various parties, events and stints as a stand-up comedian.

But his live show Sex Confessions of a Maltese Man is not only about him – it’s also the story of an entire generation of Maltese men. The show explores the shared journey to sexual (im)maturity of thousands of men now in their 30s; from being a school boy in pre-internet days and secretly watching Colpo Grosso to having a girlfriend who would not have sex because “it was a sin” (but she would be fine with “other stuff”); to fumbles in the car which left one unsure if they had lost their virginity or not.

The show will see each situation acted out by Steve alongside some extremely perverted puppets – under the direction of local puppetry genius Sean Briffa. There are even some naughty giveaways thanks to sponsors Pleasure Malta.

The audience will be encouraged to participate via an (anonymous!) questionnaire – enabling statistics about the sex lives of the spectators to be included in the show as it goes along – no doubt to the merriment of all present.

Sex Confessions of a Maltese Man is a mad, honest and brutal adult show, certainly not for the feint-hearted. See it at Splendid in Strait Street Valletta on 6,7, 8 and 9 June. Tickets from www.sjcav.org.
