Masquerade’s Musical Theatre Group will be rounding up the company’s theatrical season with the staging of feel-good musical called Lucky Stiff, at the brand new Blue Box theatre at Mspace, Msida, on 22 and 23June at 8pm and on 3 July at 5pm.
Part comedy, part murder mystery and part romance, the musical, by the acclaimed duo Flaherty and Ahrens (Seussical the Musical, Ragtime) follows British shoe-salesman Harry Witherspoon as his life is turned upside-down when he inherits six million dollars from an uncle he has never met.
The catch is that in order to inherit this money Harry must carry out an array of bizarre tasks specified in his uncle’s will: He must take his dead uncle Tony to Monte Carlo in a wheelchair and there experience gambling, clubbing, fishing, and other activities, all with the corpse by his side. As if that wasn’t complicated enough, Harry is constantly followed by Annabel Glick, a representative of the Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn, Uncle Tony’s favourite charity, which would inherit the money should Harry fail to follow the specifications in the will.
However, Harry’s biggest threat seems to be Rita La Porta, who embezzled the money and is out to get it back, with a gun in hand, blind determination, and her asthmatic brother Vinnie, by her side. Throw in an over-the-top Italian, a sexy and glamorous chanteuse, and an eclectic bunch of characters into this quirky plot and you have a guaranteed entertaining show with lots of surprising twists and turns along the way.
After two years of being part of Masquerade’s first musical theatre group, all the members are ecstatic about this musical being their final showcase. It’s a show for all ages as its message is universal: live everyday like it’s your last and don’t take any opportunity for granted. It’s an instant crowd-pleaser as the songs are catchy, the laughs plentiful, the suspense nail-biting and the romance as cute as it gets.
As a team the performers have worked on this production on every level from costumes, to set design, lights, and marketing, while keeping up with the amount of rehearsing required to stage a musical of this calibre. The pressure is on but the team is confident as they’re working very hard in order to put up a spectacle that will add to Masquerade’s fantastic track-record.
The show stars Vikesh Godhwani, Tina Rizzo, Tina Frendo, Ryan Cutajar, Vanessa Gatt, Ema Marie Attard, Philippa Mifsud and Jessica Camilleri; under the artistic direction of Rachel Fabri & Anthony Bezzina. For ticket information and booking send an e-mail to [email protected] or call 79793737.
