Din l-Art Helwa launches IX Architectural Heritage Award

Malta Independent Sunday, 21 July 2013, 09:53 Last update: about 13 years ago

Entries are now being accepted for the 2013 Din l-Art Helwa Architectural Heritage Award. The award scheme, now in its ninth year, was established by the organisation to encourage architectural excellence in a Maltese context, the rehabilitation and reuse of old buildings and the recognition of the dedicated work of those active in the field of restoration. The awards are carried out with the support of the Chamber of Architects.

Simone Mizzi, Executive President of Din l-Art Helwa comments, “With the glut of empty buildings on the market, mostly of poor quality and design,   the restoration and reuse of existing buildings, especially those of architectural value and age must be promoted and examples of excellence rewarded.  This is the aim of the Din l-Art Helwa Award Scheme each year.”

Eligible projects include the restoration or conservation of buildings, the adaptation of buildings to new uses, building additions or alterations and new building projects in conservation areas. These can relate either to a single building, to a complex of buildings or to a historic urban environment or townscape. The project will be judged on the quality of the work executed, its historic, cultural, educational and social relevance, the preliminary research carried out and the project’s aesthetic and visual merit. The project can range from small to large, and should display a standard of work that is outstanding in a Maltese context.

Submissions for this year’s Din l-Art Helwa IX Architectural Heritage Award should be for projects completed in the year prior to 31 August 2013, and submissions must be received at the offices of Din l-Art Helwa at 133 Melita Street, Valletta by 10 October. More information about the award, together with application and registration forms, are available from the Chamber of Architects or from Din l-Art Helwa’s offices.
