Malta is committed to strengthen its relations with neighbouring countries in the Mediterranean, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said in a number of separate meetings he had with leaders of countries in the Mediterranean region.

Dr Muscat is attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In a meeting with Tunisian President Mohamed Moncef Marzouki, Dr Muscat spoke of the need for commercial communities in both countries to have open communication opportunities with the aim of creating job opportunities. He suggested more contacts between Malta Enterprise and its counterpart in Tunisia, as part of a strategy for economic growth and investment opportunities.

The stability of this North African country is very important for the region’s prosperity, Dr Muscat remarked.

The Tunisian President meanwhile spoke on the natural relations between Malta and Tunisia and said he is committed to hold talks on themes of interest for both countries.

In another meeting, Lebanon President Michel Sleiman said he sees strong business potential between the two countries and his country intends to hold regular talks with Malta for the development to take place.

Dr Muscat expressed concern over the situation in Syrian and reiterated that the Maltese government is in favour of a political but not military solution. Those responsible for violence should face justice, he said.

President Sleiman continued that since Lebanon has a border with Syria, it is facing difficulties, for a number of reasons including refugees escaping the terror.

Dr Muscat urged Lebanon to continue giving access to humanitarian aid without any obstacles on the borders.
