In what may readers have seen you so far?
Over the last few years my performances have been few and far between due to other commitments. However, this summer I played Don Pedro in Much Ado about Nothing for MADC. I hope to be acting more frequently in the near future like I used to. Readers may therefore labour to recall me as Don Fernand in Love, Lust and Lynching in Fuente Ovejuna or as Michael in Immaculate (both staged in 2011). All my roles have been meaningful to me but I’m particularly fond of Micheal in Immaculate, Konstantin in The Seagull, Don Pedro in Much Ado and Adam in Someone who’ll Watch over Me.
Why did you take it up?
Initially because I was somewhat bored with life in general, and wanted to spend my free time doing something different to hanging out in clubs unsuccessfully trying to pick up women. I think I was searching for a medium to express my inner self… I was a rather shy and introverted young man back in the early 1990s. Eventually theatre became a great love.
Can you share some of the most interesting moments from your theatrical career so far?
I remember falling into Ophelia’s grave during Hamlet – thank heavens it was only a technical rehearsal! Another memorable but ghastly night was one in which a fellow cast member fell sound asleep on stage while playing a corpse. He happened to be a loud snorer and was very audible to the rest of the cast and the front-row audience, which rapidly transformed the black comedy into a farce.
Do you feel that you are taking part in something special considering The Mousetrap’s iconic status?
To be part of the cast of The Mousetrap, a play that has run for over 60 years in London’s West End, is very special. We're finding out just why it has become an icon in rehearsals. Agatha Christie has a cast of characters, all of whom are suspicious, all of whom have something to hide, and what a job the poor old bobby has to try and solve a crime – and of course, no one tells him anything in case they give themselves away. The plot twists and turns and you just don't know where it's going next. I have never seen the play and have no idea how Giles, my character is played in London. I just want to give it my best shot, and to be honest and find out what makes him tick.
What’s your theatrical ambition?
Nothing specific – I’d just be happy to continue on this voyage of discovery. As long as I’m not typecast and can attempt a variety of roles and theatre styles I’m a happy bunny.
