This week in The Salott

When you’re tipsy, call the plumber

Come, sit with me. I really need to sit down after celebrating Gaia’s winning the Junior Eurovision. I placed her picture on my mantelpiece, and proposed a toast to the little one. Many toasts, actually, which is why I invite you to sit down with me in The Salott - as I cannot stand on my new killer heels for another minute.

Not that I got roaring drunk, but I was happily tipsy.  So when I read the post in The Salott “I have only been drunk to the point I cannot remember what happened twice in my life” I wondered what everyone actually thinks - and how much everyone really drinks. Is it only the young, the new generation, who drink themselves senseless? Is the pre-drinking a new phenomenon? Would the spirit filled spirits in Strait Street tell us that this is nothing new and count how many times they could remember as opposed to could not remember?

But when thinking hard I came to the conclusion that while the young are constrained by a weekly budget to spend on spirits and other things adults don’t always have that sort of problem. Adults have booze at hand at home, the office or anywhere else. So those that binge on slow-mode throughout the week with a glass of wine to cut the afternoon, another one at the dinner table and a shot of liquor to accompany you and the sofa, aren’t they drinking more than their cubs?

Sometimes people do not want to remember, whilst other times memories are a good thing. Not so scars from surgeries. Whilst there are very few people who understand that they have battle scars, and these scars are a reminder that they have won, others are covered with articles of clothing, jewellery, accessories and, occasionally, cosmetics.

A reader who lives in Australia was rather perturbed to see her sister’s post surgery scar upon seeing it over Skype.   She showed the picture to her doctor down-under, and he, too was shocked.  Seemingly, the procedure to remove a thyroid gland is different to the way they do it here. It was referred to as “the old procedure” and I for one, would like to know why we still have this, and not the newer type of thyroid removal, especially in our State-of-the-Art hospital. Whilst we have excellent health care, there always seems to be room for improvement….hux? We, too hope that the oils travelling over Asia, sent by the sis, will soften the scar.

Oils are a wonderful thing. They have been used since time immemorial, and have made a comeback over the past decades. Oils are used in aromatherapy, and reflexology, for massage and facials. Perhaps the person on The Salott who wanted to rid herself of ‘water in the body’ might wish to speak to her General Practitioner or perhaps an aroma therapist. I’m quite sure that whilst The Salott is full of well meaning advice, something like this is best answered by someone qualified to do so.  After all, if I needed   something for Pointe Four, I would call a vet. My pooch needs to be in capable hands, and so do we.

And there are no hands as capable as those of our well-meaning parents. Curfews, reading, and not watching too much telly or playing computer games all raised their ugly heads this past week on The Salott. I had a curfew and today, I am glad I did. I learnt to appreciate freedom, and the responsibility that comes with my so-called freedom.  Reading was something we did more of too. I blame technology for the demise of book reading. I am still not quite certain if for Christmas I want a Kindle or not under the tree. I actually like to turn a page and I do not mean a virtual one.  Travelling with a Kindle is much easier than packing books, and low cost airlines don’t allow for much space for clothes and shoes if I pack books. When it comes to children reading, this is a different kettle of fish. This generation knows technology. They understand it.  To them it is the most normal thing, and so I say to the parent who is thinking of buying them a gadget, ‘GO AHEAD!”   As long as they read, be it on paper or screen, you will have succeeded.   Reading does not have to be boring.  They could read about his hobbies or interests. All you can do is try.
