Gabi Sultana, who is based in Ghent, Belgium, will be giving a piano recital in the Music Room of St James Centre for Creativity on Tuesday, 21 January at 8pm. Following her success at the Ibla Grand Prize International Music Competition in Sicily last July, where she was awarded the Contemporary Music Award, Gabi will be presenting her winning programme to the Maltese audience. Her programme includes Frederic Rzewski's Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues, a selection from George Crumb's Makrokomos Vols. 1&2 and Iannis Xenakis' Evryali. As part of the Ibla award, Gabi will be playing in the United States of America during a two-week tournée in the states of Virginia, Arkansas and New York, culminating in a recital at Carnegie Hall next May.

The Ibla Grand Prize (already in its 22nd edition) is an international showcase for musical talent of the highest order. In this edition, there were over 160 contestants from 33 countries who performed in various localities as well as before a 25-person international jury headed by Maestro Marcello Abbado.

Gabi has been described as “an outstanding pianist” of “mammoth talent”,  “a demon of energy, yet one of impeccable articulation” and “with a well chosen programme, she can seduce an audience with fascinating sounds, evocations and emotions”.  Her programme for this concert demonstrates how adventurous, exhilarating and exciting contemporary music truly is. It is a must for all music lovers.

This event is being kindly supported by Bank of Valletta, MSV Life, Malta International Airport and Tarragon Restaurant.

Tickets cost €10 (students €7) and are available from the Box Office at St James. For more information phone on 2122 3200 or visit www.sjcav.org
