‘Festen’ has been chosen as the first play to be staged at Blue Box, the new intimate theatre space at M Space in Msida. The adaptation for the stage by David Eldridge from the hit film The Celebration (festen in Danish), results in a gripping and powerful play was hailed by The (London) Independent as “an embodiment of what theatre should be”.

In Festen, Helge (played by Manuel Cauchi), the patriarch of a chain of restaurants, is celebrating his 60th birthday and everyone is coming home for the party including his sons Christian (Steffan Cheriet Busuttil), Michael (Andre Agius) and his daughter Helene (Electra Anastasi). Missing from the roster of invitees is Christian’s twin sister, Linda, who recently committed suicide. The reason for her action and the repercussions from it, form the basis of the shocking and painful events that transpire during the 24-hour period. In the midst of dinner, Christian makes a startling accusation and, even as the disbelieving guests are choosing sides, the play slowly unwraps the truth.

UK director Stephen Oliver leads a renowned cast made up of Manuel Cauchi, Amanda Conroy, Steffan Cheriet Busuttil, Andre Agius, Elektra Anastasi, Bettina Paris, Colin Willis, Tina Rizzo, Francis Nwobodo, Victor Debono, Erin Stuart Tanti, John Marinelli and Antonio Rocco.
