Weather conditions at Marsaxlokk getting worse - AD

Malta Independent Monday, 24 March 2014, 19:30 Last update: about 11 years ago

All studies should be concluded before a decision like today's is taken, AD Deputy Chairman Carmel Cacopardo said this evening.

Speaking at a press conference soon after the MEPA board gave the green light to the Delimera LNG project, Mr Cacopardo insisted that the changing weather patterns are becoming more unpredictable and said that the Delimara breakwater already has to cope with waves much higher than it was designed to withstand.

“If a Maritime Impact Assessment found that there were serious risks maybe MEPA’s decision would have been different.”

Mr Cacopardo reiterated that an offshore solution would have eliminated the risk to other vessels as well as residents.

AD Chairman Arnold Cassola said that the Maltese people will know if they made the right decision or not next year, when the power station is built.
