Government, PL welcome civil unions law

Malta Independent Tuesday, 15 April 2014, 06:54 Last update: about 11 years ago

The government and the Labour Party, as expected, all welcomed the enactment of the law on civil unions and gay adoptions, hailing it as a step in the right direction.

It is a historic day in terms of minority rights, the government said. In spite of the opposition’s abstentions, which show that the PN is neither in favour nor against the law, Parliament approved a law that will end discrimination.

The law is the climax of a voyage that started before the election. The government took the task with humility but with commitment to give LGBT people the rights which were denied to them.

The Labour Party said the law puts people on the same wavelength in terms of civil rights. It said the party is again on the right side of history.
