Victorian era house with prevailing Maltese element transformed into boutique hotel

Wednesday, 1 October 2014, 15:58 Last update: about 12 years ago

A house dating back to the Victorian era has been transformed into one exquisite neo-classical boutique, with a prevailing Maltese element. Casa Ellul, found in Old Theatre Street in Valletta, directly opposite to the Manoel Theatre, is owned by brothers Matthew and Andrew Ellul. The boutique hotel was previously a family residence, and some of its original features have been restored, including an upright piano, initially belonging to the grandmother of the family who resided within the building.

The hotel was designed by local architect Chris Briffa, while the works of photographer Kris Micallef are displayed around the hotel. Construction works started around two years ago, and the boutique hotel started welcoming guests as of July this year.  It consists of 8 suites, each designed differently.

A 360° panorama can be enjoyed from the hotel's rooftop, with scenes of the church's dome towers, Valletta's unique rooftops, the Marsamxetto harbour and glimpses of Sliema's seafront.

This type of accommodation triggered the likes of international actors and models who visited Malta.
