Malta records high national debt reduction towards end of last year, government says

Thursday, 22 January 2015, 15:21 Last update: about 11 years ago

Malta had the second highest reduction in national debt in the EU between the second and third quarter last year,

"A Eurostat statistic confirmed that at the end of September, national debt as a product of GDP decreased by 2.7%. When compared with the previous year, national debt dropped by 0.5%".

"Results published by Eurostat negate the Opposition's argument that national debt will explode under this administration. During the first quarter of 2013, when Dr Busuttil was still the PN's Deputy Leader that national debt had increased by 3.6% of GDP. This was the highest three-month increase in national debt  that was ever registered by Eurostat from Malta," a government spokesman said.
