Amadeo Grima, 35 from Birzebbugia, has pleaded not guilty to robbing JB stores in Iklin, as well as causing damage to property on August 16.
The defence asked for bail and said that while he is unemployed, he works for the Birkirkara local council through a scheme, stating that he would not be able to carry out his work if he were confined to prison. They also argued that Mr Grima suffers from drug addiction, and was meant to begin a rehab course today however was unable to attend as he was under arrest.
He also stands charged with breaching bail conditions from another case, and this was one of the arguments made by the prosecution to deny bail. Bail was not granted and his car was impounded as evidence.
Magistrate Audrey Demicoli presided over the case and inspectors Fabian Fleri and Christabelle Chetcuti prosecuted. Lawyer Joseph Ellis appeared for the defence.
