Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this morning that accountant Joe Sammut no longer holds a position in the Labour Party and therefore he sees no need for any steps to be taken against him.

Mr Sammut has been charged in court on accusations of setting up companies by Libyans to get residency permits using forged documents and fraudulent means.

Mr Sammut, a former Labour candidate and treasurer, is out on bail but had his assets frozen by the court.

Dr Muscat said that it was not his remit to take steps against accountants who are taken to court. "There is the Institute of Accountants who can do that job," he said.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is weak against the institutionalised corruption that Malta has faced over the past two years, a PN statement read.

"The Joe Sammut scandal, together with a number of other scandals by the Labour government, confirms that institutional corruption exists in Malta, and that it was introduced by people from the Labour party".

"The only reaction from Muscat following days of silence to what was said in court was to brush it off his shoulder. He must realise that he is Prime Minister and that people await him to take decisions".

The PN reiterated that Joe Sammut is close to the Labour Party, mentioning that he handled the party's finances, was an electoral candidate and was a PL media journalist for a number of years.
