The Maltese Association for Social Workers (MASW) is concerned about situations of violence, aggression and threats which are being experienced on a physical and psychological level by social workers.
Social Workers are regularly subject to threats and violence on both a physical and emotional level and therefore the MASW would like to create more awareness about the security of social workers, particularly following a number of incidents that occurred over the past weeks, a statement read. Whereas the Association respects the values of tolerance and respect, it positions itself against all types of violence.
"Nevertheless, threats and violence towards social workers are causing social workers to suffer further stress whilst performing their professional work". The Association believes that more security measures are necessary so as to reduce, where possible, certain violent situations in order to protect social workers whilst performing their professional duties.
The MASW believes that the existing safety measures need to be strengthened in order for social workers to continue offering a professional service. The association thanked the Police Force and security workers "who are already an integral part of the current arrangements that are in place".
The MASW said that although it understands that situations within families are delicate and complex, it does not believe that violence, in whatever way it is manifested, is the solution. The MASW recommends that immediate action is taken when help is requested during such incidents, while also recommending that more resources are dedicated to strengthening security at the place of work
