Opposition leader’s driver files court application arguing against need for magisterial inquiry

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil's driver has filed a court application requesting that the magisterial inquiry into the fuel consumption of Dr Busuttil's official car be halted.

In the application, the driver, Anthony Tabone, argued that there is no need for a magisterial inquiry.

Mr Tabone said he learnt about the inquiry from Dr Busuttil, but does not known on what basis it is being conducted.

Mr Tabone noted that no fraud allegations have been made and Speaker of the House Anglu Farrugia denied filing a police report about the matter.

He said the law states that a magisterial inquiry should only be held on the basis of a police report or an application, and only when such reports involve a crime punishable by more than three years imprisonment.

Mr Tabone argued that these elements do not exist in this particular case and therefore there is no need for a magisterial inquiry.

Lawyer Lena Sammut signed the application.
