A 72-year-old man was ordered to pay €1,000 after being found guilty of driving negligently, subsequently injuring a cyclist in Gharb, Gozo.
Joseph Camilleri, the 72-year-old, also had his driving licence suspended for eight days.
The incident occurred in 1 June last year, when Mr Camilleri was driving on Gharb road. He hit cyclist Marvic Mizzi, who participates in the national championship. The cyclist suffered injuries around his mouth, and the bicycle was heavily damaged.
The presiding Magistrate, Joe Mifsud, appealed for there to be more attention on the roads, especially when there are cyclists and pedestrians around. It is pointless to have discussions regarding alternative means of transport, when one considers the risk those using methods, such as bicycles, face on the road due to negligence.
