Man under arrest leaves hospital, then turns himself in at a police station

Sunday, 14 February 2016, 13:03 Last update: about 9 years ago

A man who escaped police custody while in hospital from a suspected overdose, went to a police station to ask about the charges against him, a court heard this morning.

The man, Janis Caruana, works at a bakery in Valletta and has been charged with possession of cocaine and heroin, relapsing and escaping custody.

The defence asked for bail, and said that the accused was a trustworthy person, given that he went to the police station. The prosecution argued against granting the man bail and argued that he has breached bail conditions in the past. Bail was rejected.

Lawyers Veronique Dalli and Dean Hili representing the defendant.
