Video on Europe Day released by EP office, EC representation

Why is the EU's flag the way it is? And which countries are its biggest and its smallest? These were amongst a set of simple questions asked in the video clip below to elicit people's reactions on anything EU-related. The outcome is a palette of views - including those of a few known faces - which could be seen as a reflection of the EU's own diversity.

The European Parliament Office and the European Commission Representation in Malta produced the clip to mark Europe Day, being celebrated today 9th May.

On 9 May 1950, the then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented a declaration in which he proposed the pooling of resources between European countries. The 'Schuman Declaration' is considered as the birth of what is today the European Union.

"World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it", it said. "Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity."

No wiser words could be uttered today.
