Chris Birdd, born Christopher Mizzi is a twenty three year old Hip Hop Artist / Producer from Malta, based in London - United Kingdom. This newsroom took a closer look into the young artist’s past few years and how his sound has progressed. Helena Grech writes

Conducting an interview on Skype is not the same as the real thing, it doesn’t always allow you to capture the essence of the person on the other end. But Chris is different. He is so passionate about his music that he almost jumps out of the screen at you. I ask him about his production rate, and he says: “On average I write a song a day. The past two years I focused on the production side of things which helped me grow and understand who I am as an artist.’'

‘’One of my latest singles called ‘ALNE’ is a reflection of my life through this process.’’ - https://soundcloud.com/chrisbirdd/alne

Taking it seriously

''I never understood what it meant to take up music seriously – but I guess it’s a learning process. I studied the artists I followed and tried to understand what it was that I loved about them, and tried applying it into my music, and after countless years doing that I began honing my sound.

“I always want to do something I don’t know how to do. That’s what got me into production, well, that and being fed up of relying on other people.’'

We asked Chris for some insight into his plan and replied:

“For me the next step is America, seeking out the opportunities there. No matter what you want in life you need to work for it, that means breaking out of your comfort zone and that can be scary,” he said.

He then went on to saying that when he first started out, his parents were not that supportive as they wanted a more mainstream future for him. “Normal doesn’t make any sense to me though, there is no such thing as normal. I was working 60-70 hours a week at a point, before moving to London, and I would go home to write and record. I’ve always let my gut do the driving”

“Being in London definitely has its benefits – opportunities aren’t falling at my feet but this city is pumping and alive which makes me think if I take a day off, that’s a song wasted - London keeps me aware of that,” he said.

Hip Hop in Malta

The hip hop scene in Malta is growing. I asked him how he feels about it. “It’s great to see, and there definitely is potential on the island, unfortunately the country doesn’t offer much. The real opportunities are out here and it’s a matter of what you’re willing to do to achieve your goals.''

Chris recently had a sold out show in Malta which I attended and was a massive success. He goes on to say “I’ve got a big fan base in Malta, they know my music and I always feel love whenever I’m back home. I hadn’t performed in Malta for a while, so it was great to give back.”
