What happens when two conscientious policemen are tasked with informing an elderly couple that their daughter has died in a traffic accident on Christmas Eve? What happens when they discover that the elderly couple suffers from a heart condition? They lie.

But what happens when they are caught out lying? What happens when added to this is a vicious vigilante taking the law in her hands to beat up suspected paedophiles? The Lying Kind is penned by notorious Scottish playwright Anthony Neilson (author of Stitching), who seems to have taken time off from his "experiential theatre" writing and decided to pen a farce.

Adrian Buckle, artistic director of Unifaun, beamed when asked what possessed him to abandon the track of controversial theatre to produce a comedy. "I love to have people laughing," he commented. "The sound of people's laughter can be indeed addictive.  And if Anthony Neilson can write a good farce, why shouldn't we produce it?"

The play is directed by Chris Gatt and features some of Malta's finest comic talent namely Edward Mercieca, Alan Paris, Magda van Kuilenburg, Thomas Camilleri, Antony Edridge, Polly March and Michaela Fenech. It will hit the boards at Sir Temi Zammit Hall at the University of Malta on 21, 22, 23 October at 8pm.

"I discovered this play when Anthony was in Malta to testify in our Stitching case," Mr Buckle commented.  "When I read it, I remember I couldn't stop laughing. The action gets quicker and quicker and crazier and crazier.  Now that we are rehearsing it, we are realizing that it is even funnier than it reads."

Alan Paris, who plays one of the main roles agreed and commented that if he "does not lose two stones rehearsing this play, he is doing it wrong".
