Shaun Demicoli made sports his passion from a very young age. Today he is a triathlete having achieved first place in last summer's National Sprint Triathlon organised by the Malta Triathlon Federation and obtained first place in the under 23 category in the Triathlon Series organised by the Birkirkara St Joseph Club. He was also chosen to compete in a triathlon race that took place in Tabor, Czech Republic.
Having spent almost 12 years training in many sport disciplines, such as football, basketball, gymnastics with SportMalta's #OnTheMove programmes, Shaun was spotted for his potential in triathlon. In the last years, he concentrated his training more in athletics and swimming, as they are both vital for his triathlon skills.
Shaun finds that his training at #OnTheMove (formerly known as Skolasport) has helped him build his physical fitness and developed his abilities along the years. The wide range of different sports offered by #OnTheMove programmes also gave him the opportunity to experience different disciplines.
"I appreciate the guidance I received from my past and present coaches. With their assistance, I have progressed to reach the level I have today," commented Shaun. "I like to watch the triathlon stars Brownlee Brothers - Alistair Brownlee (2012 & 2016 Olympic Gold medallist) and Jonny Brownlee (2012 Triathlon World Champion). The two brothers are my inspiration as I want to keep on training, maybe one day I will have the opportunity to be competing abroad and meet them."
Shaun's great satisfaction is when he finishes a hard race. "It makes me so happy that I want to continue training more to improve further in triathlon, while competing in as many competitions and constantly achieve better results. At the same time, I am following my studies and looking forward to graduate in mechanical engineering from the University of Malta.
Shaun shares one piece of advice to young aspiring participants at #OnTheMove: "Take your training seriously, but also see that what you are training in is making you happy. After all, this is the most important thing in sport."
