Reinstated officer being investigated over partisan video comments

Tuesday, 12 March 2019, 09:46 Last update: about 8 years ago

A reinstated police officer is being investigated over highly partisan comments he passed in a Facebook video, the Malta Police Force told this newspaper.

The video (above), posted by Edward Falzon, has since been removed.

Falzon, who retired from the police force as a constable in 2005, was reinstated in 2016 despite having been issued a blue badge by the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability, declaring him as having difficulties in walking properly.

Shortly after he was promoted to sergeant and posted to the airport VIP section. He had publicly thanked Prime Minister Joseph Muscat for the promotion.

In his now-deleted Facebook video, Falzon speaks about the infamous video showing the PM and his wife dancing and chanting at Girgenti Palace. Heaping praise on “our dear leader Joseph”, Falzon also speaks about how “we labourites, we soldiers of steel were beaten and victimised in the 1987 election,” and about how the country was “sinking” up until a few years ago.

A spokesperson for the police force confirmed that “due to investigations being carried out”, adding that “it’s not prudent to divulge further information regarding this case please.”

Falzon has also uploaded a number of posts containing partisan comments, including one urging people to vote Labour in the upcoming European Parliament elections.

Members of the police force are not supposed to participate in any form of political activity or canvassing.

Replying to a number of parliamentary questions on this incident earlier this month, Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia confirmed that the police disciplinary board was investigating the case and will take necessary action if Falzon is found to have breached the rules.
